The increase in fines for motorcyclists in Mexico City is due to a rise in traffic accidents. In the last quarter of 2024, 49% of the fatalities were motorcyclists.


Fines for Traffic Accidents in Mexico City

In Mexico City, fines for motorcyclists range from 2,171 to 6,514 pesos, depending on the infraction committed. For example, driving without a license can result in a fine of 10 to 20 times the Measurement and Update Unit (UMA). Additionally, invading exclusive lanes for public transportation can lead to a fine of 40 to 60 times the UMA, equivalent to between 4,342 and 6,514 pesos.

Another important aspect is the fine for not wearing the appropriate safety helmet while using a motorcycle. This infraction carries a value of 10 to 20 times the UMA, which translates to a penalty ranging between 1,085 and 2,171 pesos. As for the lack of license plates, the sanction can be 20 to 30 times the UMA.

According to data provided by the Citizen Security Secretariat, motorcyclists have been one of the groups most affected by traffic accidents in the capital. During the last quarter of 2024, 19,207 incidents involving motorcyclists were recorded. This period also unfortunately witnessed 106 deaths due to traffic accidents, of which nearly half were motorcyclists. Despite leading the fatality statistics, motorcyclists are also among the most fined.

In response to an information request, the SSC mentioned the five most common infractions among motorcyclists. These include not wearing an appropriate protective helmet, not carrying the corresponding license plates, lacking a valid license, not having the circulation card, or driving in exclusive public transportation lanes. Fines for these violations can be significant and vary depending on the infraction committed. For example, the fine for not wearing a helmet ranges from 2,171 to 6,514 pesos, while the fine for not having license plates can rise to up to 30 times the current UMA.
